Double checked with one change Oct 12/2015
These will fit a 0-3 month infant. or measure approx 3 1/2"
I used worsted weight yarn and a 3.25 mm hook (mine says size D on it).
You will need small amounts of two colors of yarn. about 50 gr of each.
Also you will need two small buttons, and a needle.
The stitches used are:
st(s) = stitches
ch= chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
sc2tog= single crochet two together
dc2tog = double crochet 2 together
sl st= slip stitch
SOLE of Mary Jane
Round 1:
start with color A and ch 11. Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and hdc in next 7 sts. 6 hdc in last st. Working on the opposite side, hdc in next 7 sts. 5 hdc in last ch, join with sl st in first hdc.
Round 2:
ch 1. hdc in next 8 sts. 2 hdc in each of the next 5 sts. hdc in next 8 sts. 2 hdc in next 5 sts, join with sl st in 1st hdc.
Round 3:
ch1, hdc in next 8 sts, (2 hdc in 1 st, 1 hdc in next st) 5 times. hdc in next 8 sts, (2 hdc in 1 st, 1 hdc in next st) 5 times. join with sl st.
Round 4:
ch 1. working in back loops only sc in each st around (46 sts) join with sl st in ch 1.
Upper shoe
Change to color B
Round 1:
working now in both loops, ch 1, sc in next st and each st around (46 sts). Join with sl st.
Round 2:
ch 1. sc in next 5 sts. (sc2tog, 1 sc) 6 times. sc in next 13 sts. (this should bring you to the middle of the heel of the shoe) sc2 togehter one time. sc in remaining 7 sts. join with sl st.
Round 3:
ch 1. sc in next 4 sts. hdc in next st. (dc2together) 6 times. hdc in next st. sc in next 12 sts. sc2tog one time. sc in remaining 7 sts. join with sl st. ch 1
Round 4:
sc in next 5 sts. (sc2tog) 3 times. sc in next 20 sts around. Join with sl st.
FOR RIGHT SHOE ONLY:
Do not break yarn.
ch 15. sc in fourth ch from hook. sc in next 10 sts. attatch to bootie and fasten off using invisible knot. strap made. (the 4 chains on the end of the strap make the button hole. If your button is bigger then ch more than 15 to adjust button hole size.)
FOR LEFT SHOE ONLY:
break yarn.
count back along heel 16 sts. from outside of bootie attach yarn. ch 15. sc in fourth ch from hook. sc in next 10 sts. attach to bootie and fasten off using invisible knot. strap made.
Sew buttons on. Because these are for a baby PLEASE make sure they are fastened securely. We don't want any little ones choking. (I know these are shoes, but you never know)
*because you are using worsted weight yarn, these little booties are quite stiff. Be sure to crochet on the looser side. Also you may use an F hook and get a slightly bigger size, they will fit about a 6 month baby.
For a list of crochet stitches and how to make them go here.

DeleteI need help with round 3 of the sole please!! My heel came out a little funky and I wasn't in the center of the heel; more off to the side.
DeleteI want to make these, so cute! Is the pattern you have above the corrected one without those last 8 hdc?
ReplyDeleteAlso, what brand of yarn did you use? I'm thinking of using Caron simply soft since it's a smaller yarn, would it keep the gauge?
i made my first one this morning and it turned out perfect!!! thank you so much for sharing this pattern, i can't wait to make lots of these little sets for my friends/family!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sheri!
DeleteHi...Im Stuck On Round Two Of The Upper Sole . Where it Says You Should Be At The Middle Of The HeEl Im On The Side. Then ItSays Join But There Is Nothing To Join since The Round Isn't Finished.
ReplyDeleteHI...I AM NEW AT CROCHET AND REALLY WANT TO DO THESE SLIPPERS...FOR MY BABY GIRL WHO IS GOING TO BE HERE ON OCT. ANYWAYS... I JUST WOULK LIKE TO KNOW ... CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME... LETTING ME KNOW IF I AM SUPPOSED TO BE LOOKING AT THE NICE PART OF THE SLIPPER AND THE UGLY PART OF THE SLIPPER SHOULD BE OUTSIDE?? HOPEFULLY IAM CLEAR ENOUGH THANKS!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Emma, this is an intermediate pattern, but I'm sure you can do it. The entire bootie is worked so that the right side (or nice side) is showing. Hope that helps.
ReplyDeleteK.
Is this the corrected one?
ReplyDeleteI just love them.
Thanks Bev

I tried a lot of Mary-Jane patterns, but this is the most straight-forward one by far! I must admit I may be a little obsessed with making baby shoes, seeing that my youngest baby is 20. We sadly have no babies in the family, but I bestow pretty shoes on any baby girl I hear about through family and friends. I love making them, and I love giving them, so thank you for providing me with the perfect pattern!
ReplyDeleteHi Santie,
DeleteYou just made my day with your kind words. I like to think my patterns are straight forward, they make sense to me.
When we had our last daughter the little bed they put her in in the hospital had a hand knit Santa hat(it was christmas time) and a flannel quilt that someone had made and donated. They made enough for all the little beds in the hospital. It was such a nice treat, and the blanket is still her favorite. Perhaps that is something you can do for a hospital near you? Just be sure to put a card so someone can send a thank you if they want to. I always felt bad that I couldn't thank the person who did that. It really was special....and it started my crochet hat addiction! - See more at: http://knottyknotty.blogspot.ca/2013/03/pretty-plain-little-mary-jane-free.html?showComment=1375281223099#sthash.PKtcWoJM.dpuf
Thanks for sharing. I love to crochet, been doing it for about 50 years. I am amazed at all the talented people out there who share their patterns for everyone to enjoy. Thanks again.

ReplyDeleteUpper shoe round 2 is incorrect. I have counted and re counted and it just doesnt turn out right. ???
ReplyDeletehi Suzanne,
DeleteI have made a few of these and it keeps working out for me. Where are you having the troubles? Would love to help.
For round 2, you have
Delete5sc
6x sc2tog, sc (so 18 stitches being used of the previous row)
17 sc
sc2tog (so two stitches being used from previous row)
6sc
5 + 18 + 17 + 2 + 6 = 48 stitches being needed but round 1 only has 46 stitches
Jessica, I am having the same problem. The math isn't coming out right there for me either.
DeleteFor those of you who are having trouble with the upper shoe round 2. After the 5 sc, be careful to read the (sc2tog, 1sc ) carefully. You need to repeat this 6 times as sc2tog, 1sc, sc2tog, 1sc, sc2tog, 1sc, sc2tog, 1sc, sc2tog, 1sc, sc2tog, 1sc and not as 6 sc2tog or you eliminate the 6 sc needed to get to the middle of the heel.
DeleteLove your mary Janes, i will try to make them for a few new born girls.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the idea of a Mary Jane slipper for a baby and I love that you came up with a pattern for it. However, I am having just a bit of trouble with reading the pattern. I'm pretty new to crochet but I SO WANT to learn more and more.
ReplyDeleteWhere it says to "break yarn" and "Do not break yarn" for either left or right shoe is where I get confused. Is there any way you could possible make a video to accompany this pattern so we could see the breakdown of it?
I love these slippers! I have one finished exactly by directions and it came out just right.
ReplyDeleteMy question is, did you secure the strap so all you do is slip the baby's foot in, or do
you actually button it?? It has been 33 years since I made a bootie, and I have forgotten a lot.
Hi Lamplighter, thanks for your kind words. I actually button them, but I do not have a newborn to try them on. If you can slip them on without buttoning, that would certainly be easier! You could probably do either way. Sorry that I'm not more help.
DeleteHas the mistake been changed on round 3? Is there only supposed to be 1 8 hdc
ReplyDeleteIn round2 of the shoe where there should be 6 sts. there no 6 sts. To work. I've made the shoe 2 times now and they don't come out the same size . Sorry to complain about the pattern.
ReplyDeleteI'm having the same problem.
DeleteHi there Cat24 and Gramarie
DeleteI have tested and re-tested this round, and it works out for me every time.
a few things: after ch 1 do not sc into the same stitch, sc into NEXT st. Hope this helps.
Do you have a larger size pattern, like for a 9-12 month old?
ReplyDeleteHi Brenda, I'm sorry but I don't have a larger pattern. I am not too keen on doing booties in general. If anyone has a method to increase this to a bigger size I would be greatful :)
DeleteI just used a bigger hook and I think it will be ok. Thanks!
DeleteThanks for the free pattern. Hard to find pretty newborn patterns free. Very nice work!
ReplyDeleteFirst time making baby shoes. Found this pattern very easy to follow. My suggestion would be for the left shoe. When you are doing your last round/row as you are doing your single crochet stitches count in as far as you did the right shoe so the straps match go ahead and make your strap then continue with the remaining single crochet to complete your row and fasten off. This will prevent you from needing to reattach yarn to make the strap. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for sharing the pattern. It turned out great.
ReplyDeleteHi, I hardly ever leave comments on patterns that I find, but I wanted to tell you that you did a really great job on this pattern. My brother and sister in law are about to adopt a baby girl and my mom kept asking me to crochet a pair of booties for her. I have never made any booties before and tend to stick to bigger items such as blankets, hats, and scarves as my stitch tends to be a little tighter than others. I thought I would at least try it for her and so I started to look online for the right pattern. I tried your pattern first as it seemed to be the most straight forward. It turned out perfectly! Just like your pictures. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us!
ReplyDeleteThese are the absolute BEST Mary Jane pattern that I've found.. And it's FREE :) Thank you. I love the contoured hour glass shape.. Just what I've been searching for for months. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteKristi, am i crazy or am i only supposed to have 36 stitches at the end of round 4 on the soul of the shoe? I am pretty sure i followed the pattern correctly...
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for posting your pattern. You are very generous to do so. I've been searching the Internet for weeks now for a cute form fitting Mary Jane that won't cost me $7 (for the pattern alone). My new granddaughter will be sporting a pair of these on her way home from the hospital in September. I intend to make a pair with brown soles and orange uppers and attach a sm. brown flower on the top of the shoe for Thanksgiving and for Christmas, red uppers, white soles and a little crocheted pair of green holly leaves and three French Knot berries. Once I figure out how to adapt the pattern to fit her little growing feet I'm sure I'll come up with something for every month of her first year. Thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteHi Mountain Sprite! Glad to hear you like the pattern! I would LOVE to see photos of the mary janes you come up with. What a great idea to make them festive :). If you figure out how to make them bigger as the baby grows would you consider sharing the pattern with the readers of the blog? I love sharing free patterns, but with my own crew of 4 kiddos I don't find enough time to adapt patterns to different sizes. If you are willing/able I'm sure many would be grateful! Thanks for your kind words.
Deletethank you much for the free pattern. funny how free and fee are only one letter difference and it make a world of difference.
ReplyDeletei too as others do not come out in the middle. when I end the first color i end on the side. but when i start the second color should i start at the heal?? i think since the shoe looks crooked to me. if you can respond i would appreciate it. thanks again.
Not too sure what you mean. Sounds like you are ending where I end up too, but I don't get a 'crooked' shoe. I will make these again as soon as I can and let you know. Thanks for checking out my blog! :)
DeleteShe is talking about the sc2tog stitches on the 2nd row if you start in the middle of the heel, and count over 5sc then do the sc2tog, 1sc)6 times it comes out on the side and not in the toe area so the shoe is lopsided. is that suppose to happen.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteHi Kristi!
ReplyDeleteI love this pattern however i have the same problem like everyone with round 2 of the upper shoe. i read everyone comments and yours too. you said you will make one to see whats wrong but you didnt. pls rewrite it or let us know what we should do in this round, i cant continue this shoe. :/
Thanks.
Betti.
Hi Betti. Went on a little road trip today with the family and I made these again according to this pattern. I know some people have said that they don't come out in the middle, however, others do. I did both times today. My best suggestion is to work round 2 until you do get to the middle of the back of the bootie, do your sc2tog stitch, then carry on. I couldn't find anything "wrong" with the way it is written as it worked up perfectly for me. Also, if you have made a mistake on one of the previous rows, then it may not work up properly on row 2.
I know because I read it incorrectly a few times, undid my work, and then realized what I was misreading. Hopefully this will help.
ReplyDeleteThank you Heather. Perhaps this is where people are getting messed up? I bolded this part of the pattern so that perhaps this will fix the issue for people. Thanks again!
DeleteI am so excited to have found your blog! Your patterns are adorable and I can't wait to try them all! Thank you! This one is the first I've tried and I am having some of the same problems as others have had. I think my issue might be with the join stitch. For example in round 1 you say to join with sl st in first hdc. Does this mean to join in the first actually hdc you made or 2 chains you skipped in the foundation chain? Then in round 3 do you sl st in the 1st hdc as you did in round 2 (skipping the chain 1)? And in round 4 of lower and rounds 1-4 of upper do you sc into the same st as the ch 1 for the join? I hope this makes sense to you since I think I totally confused myself lol! I would appreciate your help when you have time. Thank you Joi
ReplyDeleteHi Joi, Thanks for checking out the blog! So when it says to make your stitch in the next stitch, that is exactly what you do. Do not do it in the same stitch as the join and chain or it will come out wrong. You join the the top of the first full stitch of the previous row. make sense? I think I'm going to have to do a video on this one. That may take me a while unless everyone can tune out noisy kids in the background :P
DeleteI love this pattern but after getting the sole done it was obvious the shoe was going to be too big. Our baby is measuring on the small side and my kids have had tiny feet anyway so I was wondering how I might make them smaller. 2.5 to 3 inches. Using a hook smaller than D on worsted weight yarn is going to be tough. I was using Caron Simply Soft. Would love any ideas. Thanks!
ReplyDeletewhen I make this with worsted weight yarn, the sole only comes out to 3.5 inches. I would suggest using a smaller hook, crocheting tighter or going to a thinner yarn if it is still really too big. Is your hook 3.25mm?
DeleteYes, my hook is 3.25mm. I may try a heavier crochet thread. Tried thinner yarn but it's too soft and very hard to hang on to.
DeleteHello, I'm loving this pattern - so adorable!!! I understand to join to the actual hdc (or sc, etc), do you make your first stitch of the next round in this stitch also?
ReplyDeleteWow.. I loveit!.. and Thnxx!!
ReplyDeleteHello thanks this cool pattern, it was my first Little shoes made by handmade.😊
ReplyDeleteive been working on the 2nd row of colour B many times and the math still does add up

Hi! At the end of Upper Shoe Round 1 we are told that we should have 46 stitches. Check! But to complete Round 2 one would need 48 stitches. I've read all the comments and that is where a number of us are tripping up. I am aware that it is sc2tog THEN 1sc for a total of 6 times. When all the stitches listed in that round are added up, you'd need 48 stitches to make them. I've taken those rounds apart 3 times now without success.
ReplyDeleteAlso, in round 1 of the upper shoe, should I sl st into the ch 1, or into the 1st sc?
Thanks for your help! Greatly appreciated!
i love this pattern but i have problems with the upper shoe round 2. Where it says you should be at the middle of the heel i am not. Then it says join but there is nothing to join since the round isn't finished. I am sorry but i am very sure that round 2 is wrong.

ReplyDeleteat the end of round 2 i have only 41 stitches
ReplyDeleteHow frustrating. I've ripped itboyt five times....all I can guess is there is a miscount in then pattern. Off to find something workable. Very disappointed, these are so cute! Please fix this for the next unsuspecting soul....
ReplyDeleteHi Alice, There are many other comments from people that this is the easiest and most straight forward pattern they have used. They have used it with no issues. I could see being this upset if you had paid me money for this pattern, but this - and all other patterns on this site - is FREE TO YOU! I have worked this many times over to find the so called 'miscount' and I can't figure out where the problem is. Please read carefully. If the pattern says to crochet into the NEXT stitch, then do it. If it says SAME stitch then do it. Good luck on your search for something "workable". I sincerely hope you find something you like.
DeleteMade some of these today and they turned out very cute. This was my first time making booties and my first time reading an actual pattern and I thought it very understandable. Thanks for sharing! I will say that I made my booties with cotton and they are a bit bigger than I think a newborn shoe should be, but I don't care because they are so soft and cute!! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThank you! There lovely and easy to make.

Thank you for your pattern I will start trying to do baby shoes and this one looks really cute hopefully I can follow your instruction well and so they come out as cute as the ones you made.
ReplyDeleteAs many people have commented, I am coming up short on Round 2 of the Upper shoe. I am following the pattern perfectly and I don't end up in the middle of the heel like the pattern says, I am still on the side. I am an avid crocheter, so I don't think I am making an error.
ReplyDeleteI agree Kristi, people need to remember this is a FREE pattern; beggars can't be choosy so there is no call to be rude. Adorable shoes Kristi; I plan on sitting out on my deck & stitching these for the twin grandbabies tomorrow. One is a boy, so I am trying to come up with an alternate look for a boy.....Any suggestions would be welcomed!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Kristi! First of all: thank you!!! this is a great pattern! It's the first time I can make a perfect mary jane :) . And that is why I want to ask your permission to translate it to Spanish and post it on my blog with a link to this post, so people from other countries can follow it too. Thanks in advance. Cibeles
ReplyDeleteHii Kristi, Thank you so much for this and all patterns! I just finished these and they turned out just perfect. Thank you again :)

ReplyDeleteHi, Kristi, Thanq tons for sharing the lovely pattern. Like the few who msgd regd the 2nd row.. of the upper portion, I too got stuck there and I did take it out a few times.. till I realised there's nothing wrong with the pattern.. its just that " (this should bring you to the middle of the heel of the shoe)" sentence should come after this "sc2 togehter one time."!
ReplyDeleteThanq once again for being generous.
